1 m2, radius = 0.56 m
10 m2, radius = 1.78 m
100 m2, radius = 5.64 m
Area of Circle = π r2; π = 3.14
Four non-overlapping stations are sampled in each field site. The location of the stations is established by the GLBRC insect diversity assessment team and marked with a stake and tall flag. When using the Trimble XRS Pro GPS with the Omnistar real-time correction service or the internal Coast Guard beacon we can expect submeter accuracy (approximately + 20 to +70). We keep the Omnistar real-time correction service on the GPS I data logger and the Coast Guard beacon on GPS II. We can always start the Omnistar service on GPS II if needed for $400/year.
We switched to the Coast Guard beacon from 25 June 2008- 3 August 2009 but we went back to the Omnistar service because the connection to the Coast Guard beacon wasn’t dependable . We are in a weak spot for the beacon and also in high humidity conditions it is more difficult to receive the signal. When we were able to get the connection the resolution was similar (5 cm – 30cm less accurate than Omnistar during the testing periods).</description><protocol id="protocol_106"><title>GPS Protocol for the LTER Laboratory</title><creator><positionName>Data Manager</positionName></creator><distribution><online><url>http://lter.kbs.msu.edu/protocols/106</url></online></distribution></protocol></methodStep><methodStep><description>Surface (0-25 cm) soil samples are typically collected in the fall, composited by plot, and sent to an analytical laboratory for analysis and for nutrient and liming recommendations for field crops. Analyses include pH, lime index, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and cation exchange capacity. Samples collected in the fall provide liming and fertilizer recommendations for the following year.

Deep cores (0-100 cm) are collected every 5-10 years and samples are analyzed separately by depth interval to monitor longer-term changes in composition with depth.
