Agricultural models for describing crop productivity and biophysical processes started to be developed during the 1970s and 1980s due to the confluence of, at least, three major factors: (1) the existence of a quantitative understanding of the effects of plant growth factors on yield, (2) the need to quantify aspects of productivity and environmental quality, and (3) the increasing availability of main frame and personal computers. The EPIC (Erosion Productivity Impact Calculator) model (Williams et al., 1989) was one such model. The original purpose of the development of EPIC was the need of the U.S. Department of Agriculture to have a tool for evaluating the status of natural resources and, specifically, for quantifying reductions in crop productivity due to soil erosion (Williams et al., 2008b).
