This dataset contains the total carbon and nitrogen content of plant material of the GLBRC Biofuel Cropping System Experiment (BCSE) at peak biomass and at harvest, and the complete chemical analysis of leaf tissue of selected species to occasionally assess their nutrient status.

GLBRC091-001 Poplar Leaf Tissue Chemical Analyses

Comprehensive chemical analyses of poplar (G8) leaf tissue sampled occasionally from fertilized main plots and unfertilized subplots to assess nutrient status. As of August 2013, the main section had been fertilized only once in June 2010 with ammonium nitrate (156 kg N/ha or 140 lbs N/acre). Carbon and nitrogen were measured by the KBS LTER lab; all other analyses were performed by the Michigan State University Soil and Plant Nutrient Laboratory. Note that subplots were discontinued after the 2018 harvest.

GLBRC091-003 Total Carbon and Nitrogen Content at Peak Biomass

Total carbon and nitrogen content of plant samples collected at peak biomass for estimates of annual net primary production (ANPP) from all BCSE treatments (G1-G10). Samples are composited by sample type and replicate (across stations). Samples from annual crop treatments include grain and stover fractions and a combined sample of non-crop species. From 2008-2017, ANPP samples of perennial crops were sorted to species: analyses of monoculture perennial treatments include crop (switchgrass and miscanthus) plus a combined sample of all additional species (“unsorted”); analyses of mixed perennial treatments include the top three species by weight and an aggregate sample of all remaining species. Since 2018, ANPP samples of perennial treatments are left “unsorted” and analyzed as such.

GLBRC091-004 Total Carbon and Nitrogen Content at Harvest

Total carbon and nitrogen content of plant samples collected at harvest from all BCSE treatments (G1-G10). Representative samples are taken from the harvested crop at the time of harvest, which includes grain for corn and soybean, stover for corn, and unsorted plant matter for perennial treatments

GLBRC091-005 Switchgrass Leaf Tissue Chemical Analyses

Comprehensive chemical analyses of switchgrass leaf tissue collected from plants in the fertilized split plots (G5) of the GLBRC Marginal Land Experiment (MLE) and the fertilized main plot (G5) of the Biofuel Cropping Systems Experiment (BCSE).
