2026-03-18 KBS G8 Harvest {"John Deere 7420a Tractor","John Deere 7330 Tractor","Wagon - GNUSE 12 ton Forage Wagon, Green."} Harvest on KBS GLBRC BCSE Site G8 poplar trees. Order of harvest for G8 plots: Rep 5 and 3 harvested on March 18, 2026. Reps 4 and 1 were harvested on March 19, 2026. Reps 2 was harvested on March 20, 2026. Trees were removed and weighed from Rep 5 on March 18, 2026. Trees were removed and weighed from Reps 3 and 4 on March 19, 2026. Trees were removed and weighed from Reps 2 and 1 on March 23, 2026. K.J. Kettler, Mickey Trimmer, and Sam from the Michigan State University Kellogg Forest harvested the G8 poplar tree. Trees were cut/harvested with chainsaw. Because of reduced labor and slow tree growth (or no tree grow) from the new planting in 2019 harvest the micro-plots were never fertilized with N fertilizer. i.e. the trees never reached the growth stage that would have been optimal to apply N fertilizer so we never applied the N fertilizer to the tree micro-plots. The first row on both the north and south side being removed first to eliminate edge effect and the first row on the east and west sides were removed to eliminate edge effect. Entire plot area was combined in to one plot weight for each plot. Bundles of trees were removed from the plots with the JD 7420a loader tractor. Trees were fed through a wood chipper. The wood biomass was chopped in to the GNUSE 12 ton forage wagon. The GNUSE wagon is equipped with load cells so that it can weigh biomass in the field directly on the wagon. Wet grab samples were collected and placed in the Grieve plant drier to determine percent moisture in the wood biomass. After cutting trees stumps were treat with Roundup to prevent poplar for regrowing. 6843

"} Corn Stover Harvest: Jarrod Rhoades mowed corn stover in G1 main plots: Reps 3, 2, 5, 4, & 1. Corn stover was mowed into windrows so that they could be bailed. The 6 rows (15 ft) in the west micro-plots of each rep were not mowed. Equipment Used: JD 7420a tractor and Loftness 15 ft Draper Windrower Shredder. Joe Simmons bailed corn stover with Krone 1270 square baler. Reps 2, 3, 4, 5, & 1. Equipment Used: JD 7520 tractor with Krone 1270 square baler. Ethan Rocklin removed bales from plots: Equipment Used: JD 7420(b) tractor (with loader) was used to move/load bales. Equipment Used: Dodge truck and gooseneck trailer were used to move and weigh bales. Portable scale was put on the rear of gooseneck and bales were place on scale to obtain weight. Bales were used as hunting blinds in the BCSE site. 6825
2025-10-31 KBS G3 Harvest {"John Deere 7350 Self-propelled forage harvester/chopper","Wagon - GNUSE 12 ton Forage Wagon, Green."} Harvest GLBRC main site treatment G3 (sorghum) and G6 (miscanthus) main plots. Equipment Used: All plots were harvested with the JD 7350 self-propelled forage harvester equipped with a JD 676 cutting head. Plant material was chopped into a Gnuse forage wagon that is fitted with load cells to determine weight of harvested biomass. Cutting height of remaining plant stubble was 4-6 inches in all reps. Grab samples from each rep was placed in paper bags weighed for wet weight and placed in plant dryer and reweighed to determine percent moisture for each replication. 6803
